Joseph Overbey is a Brooklyn based cinematographer and motion picture colorist. Whether shooting narrative or documentary, he aspires to create every frame as a celebration of light, color, and life. With formal training in both cinematography and traditional still photography, his visual style is inspired by a whimsical curiosity of life and culture.

Overbey has been Director of Photography on several independent narrative shorts that have been selected by festivals such as, The New York Short Film Festival, The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival & Toronto’s Inside Out Film Festival. Additionally shooting for commercial clients such as: ARTE, Communique Magazine, Polo /Ralph Lauren Swimwear.

Overbey has been an active member of Filmshop, a nonprofit collective of independent filmmakers, since 2018. He was selected to join Filmshop Studio, Brooklyn’s first cooperative film studio in 2019 and was co-leader of the North Brooklyn chapter for three seasons.

Overbey is currently in post production on his first documentary feature, The Spirit of Japan, which chronicles the work and daily life of a family running a small shochu distillery in rural Southern Japan.
